Courses Offered Spring 2010:
The Basic Essay (All Grades): This class is geared towards those who struggle with writing and just want to learn how to construct a very simple and short essay. All students with basic reading/writing skills are welcome! In the first part of the course, students will learn how to brainstorm for topics, write an outline, learn the parts of a basic paragraph, and link those paragraphs together into an essay. In the second part, they will construct a strong opening and closing along with discovering how to edit their essay for grammar and style.

The Basic Research Paper (High School-Adult): This 8-week course will cover all the basics of essay writing, from proper outline formatting to styling sentences. Students will be taught proper citations in Turabian and MLA as well as techniques for writing timed essays used for standardized tests. At the conclusion of the course, each student will have completed a six-page essay on a topic of his or her choice. Advantages for students will include higher scores on the new writing-focused SAT, greater chance of admission to a college or university, better grades throughout his or her education, and a life-long professional skill.

The Basic Research Paper (Recommended for 5th-9th grades): All the basics of essay writing tailored specifically for younger students. Students will learn to how to structure outlines, create a bibliography, and write one two-page essay. This final essay will be on a topic of the student’s choice; incorporating a research paper from another class is also acceptable. Students who take this class will gain a strong foundation for good writing and a head start for the more advanced writing required in high school.

Creative Writing for Kids (Recommended for 4th – 9th grades): Is your child always coming up with new and imaginative stories? This course will help young writers achieve the three C’s of good creative writing: conciseness, clarity, and completion. Throughout the course students will learn all the elements of story-writing while finishing a fictional work of their own. Young writers who learn to tell stories well now will remain confident in creative writing for the rest of their lives.
